ZEPHYR AND ENERGY MEMBERS REUNITE ON KKFI RADIO AND FOR A LIVE CONCERT AT CROSSTOWN STATION

Tommy Stephenson and Bobby Berge of Tommy Bolin’s legendary bands Zephyr and Energy got together with Kansas City guitarists Jeff Scheetz and Fast Johnny Ricker for a KKFI 90.1 FM Radio show with interviews and a live performance on December 11 and a full concert the following night at Crosstown Station in Kansas City, MO. Tommy Stephenson is an award winning keyboardist, composer and producer of several film, television and music projects. Stephenson joined the great, innovative guitar player Tommy Bolin to form the 70’s fusion band Energy. During the subsequent years, Stephenson has recorded or played on tour with numerous major artists, including Joe Walsh, Eric Clapton, The Eagles, Gary Wright, Paul Butterfield, The Band, Van Morrison, Joe Cocker, Albert King, Albert Collins, B.B. King, Chuck Berry, John Lee Hooker, Big Mamma Thornton and The Pointer Sisters. In 1998 Stephenson assembled a group of outstanding musicians under the band name F-5 to record his first solo CD, Dodging The Dream Killers. Having followed Stephenson’s career, Gateway 2000 computer company co-founder Norm Waitt approached Stephenson and offered to support the project after hearing him perform at a tribute concert for Tommy Bolin. The recording was produced by Woodstock’s legendary Michael Shrieve, drummer for Santana and member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The CD met with great acclaim upon its release in 1999, including a nomination for “Top Ten Best Jazz CDs of the Year” by the editorial and review website Jazz Central Station, alongside works by such prestigious artists as Pat Metheny and Gary Burton.

Bobby Berge was a founding member of Energy with the legendary Tommy Bolin on guitar. Bobby also played with Tommy as the second drummer in Zephyr, on many demos and jams Tommy recorded in Colorado and California, and on Tommy’s albums Teaser and Private Eyes. After Energy Bobby went on to play with Buddy Miles, appearing on the albums More Miles Per Gallon and Bicentennial: A Gathering of the Tribes. Another great band, Billy Ryan and Black Irish, featured Bobby tearing it up with super guitarist Billy Ryan. Bobby is currently working with is band The Blues Bashers, appearing at the last two Sioux Falls JazzFests.

Fast Johnny Ricker is a blazing blues-rock guitarist and slide master. Johnny provides an electrifying, high voltage, live performance combining psychedelic rock with blues traditions. Johnny has shared the bill and or performed with The Fabulous Thunderbirds with Jimmie Vaughn, Johnny Winter, Double Trouble, Junior Brown, Sonny Landreth, Leon Russell, Nick Lowe, Charlie Musselwhite, George Thorogood, Commander Cody, Bo Diddley and many others. He has played festivals on the same bill with Bob Dylan, Joe Walsh, Albert King, Jonny Lang, Luther Allison, Etta James and The Red Devils. The band has performed throughout the Midwest from Chicago to Texas to Nashville.

Jeff Scheetz has released eight CDs. He’s written a guitar instructional book and CD, released an instructional video, and two live DVDs. He has also recorded four instructional CD-rom courses for Truefire, and is considered one of the top guitar instructors in the U.S. He has toured the U.S., Europe and Mexico, and has been featured in Guitar, Guitar Player, Guitar School, and Guitar World magazines, as well as numerous magazines in Japan and Europe. He is endorsed by Ernie Ball strings (and his name appears on the string package), has performed over 300 clinics worldwide for Yamaha guitars and appeared as a product specialist at numerous NAMM shows, the LA guitar show and more. He is busy in his studio producing and mixing, with acts like “Crunchy” from former Galactic Cowboys bassist Monty Colvin. He has recorded spots for Toyota, Chevrolet and many other commercials. He has written columns and articles for many magazines including Premier Guitar. Matt Waddill is not only a phenomenally soulful vocalist, and a grooving bass player, but he is also a top notch guitarist. One of those guys who can do it all. Matt studied guitar for years with Jeff Scheetz and they became friends. A few years later as Jeff’s band was looking for a bass player they hooked back up with Matt eventually taking over the vocal duties as well. Matt and Jeff are also writing partners for The Jeff Scheetz Band.
